A Truly Great Idea – what is the formula?

We work with ideas every day. And we have become experts in getting the feel for what is really golden nuggets. They come once in a while. They often feel simple and brilliant at the same time. They often have both a trendy angle but at the same time a timeless value in them.

And for some time now we have been part of the experience and the starting up of one of those golden nuggets. Little Big Malmö.

LittleBig_shirt-3

The small city of Malmö (300.000 inhabitants) wants to become the most international city in the world! In an age of racism, extremism and beginning lack of trust in many parts of the world (all tendencies that kills creativity and innovation vibrations), Little Big Malmö wants to react to that and aims to become the world’s most international city. The first and only city to represent all 193 countries recognized by the UN. It lacks 24 nationalities. 24 persons from countries like Tonga, Brunei, Marshall islands etc.

The first time we heard about the project we said: “Woooow. This is international news potential. This is CNN-good”.

And the day after the launch Wired Magazine wrote a big piece about it. It is that good.

So how will this be done. Of course through crowdfunding (all citizens of Malmö can buy a share for 16 SEK – 1,5 USD) and sponsorships from local brands like IKEA, SKANSKA, MKB etc . It is not the city officials doing this but a group of idealists starting a foundation. The collected cash will be used to fund a “soft landing” for Malmo’s new residents. The Little Big Malmö Foundation will give the participants a plane ticket (and a return ticket in case they feel like Malmö stinks), a 12 month job opportunity, housing, phones, a bike and tickets to the local cultural scene so they can truly be part of the Malmo way of life.

So why can you feel right away that this is one of the really rare but really great ideas?

Once again it is simple. It is both trendy and part of history. It has a well-defined goal. And a very easily communicated goal as well. And a goal with a higher purpose. It is as easy as that. And as hard.
